The school of English at Universidad Americana is pleased to inform that the second symposium on teaching and learning English as a foreign language will take place on May 28, 29, and 30th, 2025.

How to participate?
Deadline for Submissions: 17 of May, 2025

Authors willing to submit an abstract should send an email to escueladeingles@uam.cr attaching the abstract following these requirements:

  • The official and only accepted language is English.
  • The length must not exceed 250 words.
  • Keywords and References (most important) must be included.

The abstracts and papers submitted will be peer-reviewed by the organization committee based on originality, technical quality and presentation.

Topics can include
  • Trends, innovative practices and new methodologies in teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
  • Emerging technologies used in teaching and learning English as a foreign language.
  • Developing intercultural communication.
  • EFL teachers' competencies development.

Once the abstract is accepted, the authors will be contacted to define date and time of presentation. All participation is remote.

Organization
La Universidad Americana (UAM)

Universidad Americana UAM was authorized by Consejo Nacional de Enseñanza Superior Universitaria Privada (CONESUP), in session No 326-97 on June 1997. UAM offers several programs including licenciaturas and masters degrees.

The English Teaching major has the validation of SINAES (Sistema Nacional de Acreditación de la Educación Superior) since 2018.

Head of the English Department at UAM

Professor Melendez brings over a decade of distinguished teaching experience in English as a Foreign Language (EFL), spanning elementary, high school, and college levels since 2004. He holds a Bachelor's degree in English Teaching and a Licenciatura in English Studies from the University of Costa Rica (UCR), complemented by a Licenciatura in English Teaching from Universidad Americana (UAM). Additionally, he earned his Master's degree in Education and Family Counseling from the prestigious Universidad Complutense de Madrid, Spain. His comprehensive academic background and extensive classroom experience have established him as a respected educator in the field.

Graciela Ferreiro Santamaría
College professor and researcher

Master Ferreiro is a distinguished English professor with over two decades of experience in higher education. Her academic career includes prestigious roles as a lecturer in the Master's in Education program at Universidad Latina and serving as Head of the English Department at two private universities in Costa Rica. Her expertise extends to research competencies and curricular design, where she has made significant contributions to academic program development.  

Currently, Master Ferreiro serves as a full-time researcher at the English Department of Universidad Americana while simultaneously working as a research consultant for the English Department at Universidad Latina de Costa Rica. She provides expert guidance as a capstone project advisor at both institutions.  Ms. Ferreiro has presented at international conferences, published numerous articles on English teaching methodologies and research competencies, and serves as a peer reviewer for respected international journals. 

Paulina Rojas
College professor and extensionist

Professor Rojas holds both Bachelor's and Licenciatura degrees in English Teaching and is currently  pursuing a Master's in Psychopedagogy. Beyond her teaching responsibilities in the Bachelor's and Licenciatura programs at Universidad Americana (UAM), she actively manages extension service projects that forge valuable partnerships with local institutions, including municipal councils and community associations throughout the region. Professor Rojas also provides essential support to the School of English's coordination team, contributing to administrative excellence and program development. Her commitment to both academia and community engagement exemplifies UAM's mission of educational leadership and social responsibility.
